Obama at Navy Yard massacre memorial: Recent shootings 'ought to obsess us'

Lamenting “once more” a deadly mass shooting, President Barack Obama assured families of the Navy Yard massacre victims at a memorial service on Sunday there was “nothing routine about this tragedy, there’s nothing routine about your loss.”
The service was held at the Washington Marine Barracks, just blocks from where authorities say Aaron Alexis shot and killed 12 Navy Yard workers on Monday afternoon and injured eight others.
"I fear there's a creeping resignation that this is somehow the new normal," Obama said. "It ought to obsess us, it ought to lead to some sort of transformation."

2015: Political jobbers, war-mongers have seized Nigeria –Mark

Senate President, David Mark, said yesterday, that political jobbers and war-mongers have seized the Nigerian political space ahead of the 2015 general elections which is still two years away. The Senate President made the observation while welcoming Senators at Tuesday’s plenary after a seven-week recess.
Mark noted that the antics of those agitating for political office ahead of 2015 was to unduly overheat the polity, adding that beating the drums of war and making treasonable comments were well-worn antics that would not work.
“Distinguished colleagues, more than ever before, our countrymen and women are looking up to us for leadership, redemption and stability. The polity is assailed by political tremors, all on account of the 2015 elections. Here, in this chamber, we are first and foremost, Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and though not impervious to the present centrifugal political pulls, we must put the interest of Nigeria above every other consideration.

Job-seeker attacks China's 2nd-richest man

CHINESE police have detained a labourer who approached China's second-richest man to ask for a job, and then attacked and injured the company chairman when he denied the request, state media report.

Zong Qinghou, chairman of food and beverage giant Hangzhou Wahaha Group, is recovering from injuries to his left hand after Friday's attack in the eastern city of Hangzhou, the official Xinhua News Agency said on Wednesday.
Citing Hangzhou police, Xinhua identified the suspect as a 49-year-old migrant worker surnamed Yang and from the neighbouring province of Jiangsu. It said Yang borrowed 30,000 yuan (about $A5372) earlier this year and travelled to Hangzhou in search of work.
Yang sought out Zong, 67, near his home after watching a television program about the businessman's assistance to migrant workers and asked the man for a job with his company, Xinhua said.
It said Yang attacked Zong after his job request was turned down.
Zong had been China's richest man, but fell to the second place this year with total wealth of nearly $US19 billion. He founded Wahaha and built it into China's largest beverage manufacturer.

Ibori hid assets in Oando – British prosecutor

Convicted former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, hid some of his assets in an indigenous integrated oil company, Oando Plc, according to a British prosecutor.
The prosecutor was quoted by Reuters in a report on Monday as saying that the former governor, who is serving a 13-year jail term in the United Kingdom for fraud and money-laundering, hid some of his assets in the oil firm; adding that money passed from Oando’s accounts into Ibori’s Swiss accounts.
Ibori had in February 2012 pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud and money-laundering worth £50m.

Chemical weapons deal wins time for Syria's Assad but at a cost

Bashar al-Assad's chemical weapons bargain with Russia and the United States offers another political and military lifeline to the Syrian president, just two years after he was dismissed in Washington as a "dead man walking".
U.S. Secretary of State Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister … The deal, reached under the shadow of threatened U.S. air strikes and only after the intervention of Syria's ally Moscow, does come at a cost to the Syrian leader - a fact which likely explains the muted response in Damascus when it was announced.
By requiring Assad to surrender a chemical weapons arsenal which until last week his government had barely acknowledged, it would strip him of both a fearsome military advantage over rebels at home and his most potent deterrent to any further attacks by Syria's enemy Israel.

Dad Wears Short Shorts to Teach Daughter a Lesson, Becomes Online Celeb

A Utah dad got so fed up with his teen daughter’s too-short shorts that he taught her a fashion lesson she'll never forget. Scott Mackintosh publicly modeled his own version of his daughter's Daisy Dukes and, in the process, became an Internet hero.

“I simply did this in hopes that my daughter would know of my great love for her and that she knows of her great worth,” Scott Mackintosh told the Deseret News about the photo of himself in cutoffs, which has since become a Tumblr sensation.  “Now that it has gone viral, I hope that young women everywhere understand their great worth. I will look like an idiot any day if that point gets across."

STORY THAT INSPIRES

Nikola Tesla (1856 –1943) was one of the greatest and most enigmatic scientists who played a key role in the development of electro magnetism and other scientific discoveries of his time. Despite his breathtaking number of patents and discoveries his achievements were often underplayed during his lifetime.
Short Biography Nikola Tesla
tesla
Nikola Tesla was born 10 July 1856, of Serbian nationality in Smiljan, the Austrian Empire.
Tesla was a bright student and in 1875 went to the Austrian polytechnic in Graz. However, he left to gain employment in Marburg in Slovenia. Evidence of his difficult temperament sometimes manifested and after an estrangement from his family, he suffered a nervous breakdown. He later enrolled in the Charles Ferdinand University in Prague, but again he left before completing his degree.

During his early life, he experienced many periods of illness and periods of startling inspiration. Accompanied by blinding flashes of light, he would often visualise mechanical and theoretical inventions spontaneously. He had a unique capacity to visualise images in his head. When working on projects, he would rarely write down plans or scale drawings, but rely on the images in his mind.
In 1880 he moved to Budapest where he worked for a telegraph company. During this time, he became acquainted with twin turbines and helped develop a device that provided amplification for when using the telephone.
