Deep Earth Heat Surprise: New Findings On How Heat Is Conducted in the Deep Lower Mantle

The key to understanding Earth's evolution is to look at how heat is conducted in the deep lower mantle -- a region some 400 to 1,800 miles (660 to 2,900 kilometers) below the surface. Researchers at the Carnegie Institution, with colleagues at the University of Illinois, have for the first time been able to experimentally simulate the pressure conditions in this region to measure thermal conductivity using a new measurement technique developed by the collaborators and implemented by the Carnegie team on the mantle material magnesium oxide (MgO). They found that heat transfer is lower than other predictions, with total heat flow across Earth of about 10.4 terawatts, which is about 60 % of the power used today by civilization. They also found that conductivity has less dependence on pressure conditions than predicted.

The results were published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Ozone Hole Might Slightly Warm Planet, Computer Model Suggests

A lot of people mix up the ozone hole and global warming, believing the hole is a major cause of the world's increasing average temperature. Scientists, on the other hand, have long attributed a small cooling effect to the ozone shortage in the hole.

Now a new computer-modeling study suggests that the ozone hole might actually have a slight warming influence, but because of its effect on winds, not temperatures. The new research suggests that shifting wind patterns caused by the ozone hole push clouds farther toward the South Pole, reducing the amount of radiation the clouds reflect and possibly causing a bit of warming rather than cooling.

Said a source: “You know Bama and some other places in Borno where these terrorists have carried out raids in recent times are located close to our border with the Republic of Cameroon.

Global-warming Armageddon? It may be more likely than you thought

A runaway greenhouse Armageddon in which the oceans boil dry could theoretically happen on Earth, researchers claim. The good news is that human activity on its own will probably not be enough to trigger such an end-of-the-world scenario in the near future. Previously it was thought more energy from the sun would be needed for global warming on Earth truly to spin out of control. But new calculations from Canadian and US scientists show that catastrophic warming can occur more easily than had been assumed. For a planet receiving the same amount of solar radiation as the Earth, a runaway greenhouse effect is a realistic possibility. The team, led by Colin Goldblatt from the University of Victoria in Canada, wrote in the journal Nature Geoscience: "The runaway greenhouse may be much easier to initiate than previously thought.
